Where to start? Where we started.

Tequisquiapan

After deciding we wanted to try living outside of the U.S. for a year to see if we might want to live abroad for a while, it was pretty easy to decide on Mexico as the first stop.

Land border. Stable government. Vibrant cultures. Tons of history and an amazing variety of regional food. Easy!

We figured the “pueblo mágico” of San Miguel de Allende would be a good start. Except, we ended up leaving our Los Angeles home of 21 years a few days early because the movers arrived sooner than anticipated.

With the monthlong rental in San Miguel not starting until July, we found a place to stay for a couple days in the smaller town of Tequispuiapan in the state of Querétaro, about 90 minutes away. To make things easy on us, the town goes by the nickname of “Tequis”, pronounced like Techies.

Queretaro is one of the better known wine-growing states in Mexico, along with Baja California and Guanajuato.

Along with wines and cheeses…

there’s also a statue of Cantinflas…

…which gave Chica the opportunity to relive her James Dean moment in Griffith Park, Los Angeles.

We had a great couple days in Tequis. An easy first landing spot that felt like the first bit of vacation we had since starting the whole packing, storing, moving and driving-across-the-border thing. Plus, just outside the old part of town is perhaps the best pastor tacos we have yet had in Mexico.
